 POLICIES AND GENERAL INFORMATION

FEDERAL MANDATE - TITLE IX
Title IX prohibits sex discrimination against students, parents/guardians and employers based on program exclusions, denial of benefits, specific harassment incidents, etc. Complaints should be brought to the attention of either the Superintendent or the Principal. A grievance procedure exists to try to resolve situations and comply with existing laws. The local sex equity policy statement and grievance procedures are available for review upon request.

FIELD TRIPS/SPECIAL ACTIVITIES
It is our belief and philosophy at Harrison School that our primary responsibility is to educate the child. It is also our belief that field trips, dances, special events, assemblies, recesses, etc. are to be earned by the child. Those not earning the privilege because of not doing work or misbehaving will not be allowed to participate. Parents/guardians, students, teachers and administration may agree upon individual contracts. (This allows for individual differences.)

Parental consent forms are available to allow students to accompany school groups on authorized field trips and visits away from school during school days. THOSE NOT ALLOWED TO ATTEND BELONG IN SCHOOL ON FIELD TRIP DAYS. Field trips are generally an extension of school-related studies but may be withheld due to improper/inappropriate student conduct (misbehavior, failing grades and/or incomplete work). No one may attend a field trip without a signed permission form from home prior to the trip. Field trip fees generally exist for students. Students not in attendance at school will not be allowed to attend after-school functions on that same day unless approved by the administration.

FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT
Each public body must make available to the public all records not excluded by Freedom of Information Act, provide an appeal process for denial or access to information, briefly describe the school district, describe how and from whom public records are to be requested, list types of records prepared/received as of July 1, 1984, and avail this list to the general public. (Cost not to exceed actual reproduction charges).

A written request of records by a citizen will be responded to within seven days, which could be extended, to 14 working days depending on the nature of the request. If a request is denied the following process will be used: written decision to deny, reason to denial, (specify the exemption), name/title of denying official and right to appeal to Superintendent or judicial review of Superintendent's decision.

FUNDRAISING
Prior approval by the Administration is needed for any type of fundraising.

HARRISON-BENWELL CONSERVATION DISTRICT
The Harrison-Benwell Conservation District is located directly to the West of the school. Any parent/guardian NOT wishing their child to go to the Harrison-Benwell Conservation District during school hours for education-related group activities should write a note to the school office.

HARRISON HAPPENINGS
A monthly newsletter is generally given to students the last Friday of each month of school throughout the year. The purpose is to highlight school events, upcoming activities and to provide regular information about what's happening at school. If you are not getting these newsletters, please ask your child to share them with you at home. We feel regular communication is a great way to keep everyone "in the know" concerning Harrison.

VISITORS TO THE BUILDING
Parents/guardians may visit the school whenever they so choose. Advance notice is required to accommodate teachers if parents wish to visit the classroom. Parents/guardians may not deliver student items to the classroom. Materials must be left at the Front Office.

All visitors must initially register at the Front Office and put on a visitor tag per law. Parents/citizens are urged to view the educational program in actual operation as well as meet with staff members at designated conference dates.
We urge citizens to observe and participate in our educational program. School visitor passes are available in the Front Office. Building doors are locked for security and safety. Please seek entrance at the Front Office only.

 TELEPHONE

Phones are to be used primarily for school business. Teachers may be available for phone calls immediately after school.

Necessary messages for teachers may be left with the secretarial staff throughout the day. Parents/guardians should call the school by 9:00 AM on days their children are ill and cannot attend.

A public telephone is not available for students. The office staff will not relay messages from home to students unless an emergency situation exists.

Students should not expect to use any school office phone except in an extreme emergency. All after-school arrangements must be made at home. Permission should first be granted from the student’s teacher before the student comes to the office to use the telephone.
